This super-quick, super-easy instructional post on how to toast pine nuts will bring your dreams of homemade keto pesto to life. All you need is a frying pan, a wooden spoon, and well, pine nuts!
So let’s be real for a minute. Most of you probably don’t need to read a post on how to toast pine nuts. You might think it’s silly and a waste of time. If you’re one of those people, no worries! Just visit my home page to see what other Keto and low carb deliciousness is out there.
But for the rest of you… I have a lot of homemade pesto recipes coming up that use pesto with toasted pine nuts and to be completely honest, I Google-searched “how to toast pine nuts” when I made my pesto.
A lot of people think you have to use oil, but you really don’t. I found when toasting these pine nuts that they actually contain quite a bit of moisture and the oil isn’t necessary.
You only need three things to get your pine nut toasting on. A frying pan (PLEEEEASE don’t use teflon!), a wooden spoon (or something that won’t scratch your pan) and well, pine nuts!
I know pine nuts cost A TON. I can’t bring myself to buy those tiny packages for $6.99 at my local grocery store, so I buy a big bag from Thrive Market. Don’t know about Thrive Market? It’s one of my favorite online stores (right after Amazon 🙂 )!
So Thrive Market is an online health food shop, basically. You pay a small annual fee to be a member and can then order thousands of products at wholesale prices. I make about one order a month, mostly keto staples, and save between $1k-2k a year using Thrive Market over my local grocery store.
You can search by values (e.g., keto, whole30, paleo, vegetarian, vegan), and they have health and beauty products along with all the wonderful foods. At the time of this posting, you can receive a free 30-day trial, 25% off your first order and free shipping with this link. It’s a very cool deal, and I’ve been a loyal member for three years now.
How to Toast Pine Nuts - Keto Nuts
- 1 c. pine nuts
- Heat a frying pan over medium-low heat until warmed.
- Place the pine nuts in the frying pan in a single layer. Use a wooden spoon to spread them out so they are all touching the bottom of the pan.
- Give the pine nuts about 30 seconds to start toasting.
- Begin stirring constantly with the wooden spoon. You can leave them still for 5-10 seconds at a time to allow for toasting but any longer than that will cause them to burn.
- When all sides are golden brown, transfer them off the heat and to another dish so they stop cooking.
